Civocracy is committed to ensure that its platform is accessible to every user. We understand that individuals with a low level of digital competency or varying disabilities may have different needs and requirements to use the Civocracy platform. This is why we continually work on improving the accessibility and usability of our platform by following the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) in terms of development, design process and user testing.
What is digital accessibility?
Digital accessibility refers to the ability of a website to be easily navigable and understandable by the widest possible range of users, including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive disabilities.
For this purpose, the W3C, international web standardisation organization, has established a series of recommendations intended mainly for web designers and developers called the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
The most recent version is WCAG 2.1 and includes seventeen new accessibility criteria such as text spacing and contrast. The latest version of WCAG 2.1 is available here.
What is done on the Civocracy platform?
Our developers and designers followed the WCAG 2.1 recommendations when creating the Civocracy platform and website.
Here are the main points we have been particularly focusing on:
- Facilitate navigation with tabbing and keyboard navigation, HTML elements
- Give the possibility to write alternative text when publishing an image
- Design focus states to help users navigate and understand where they are
- Help users understand inputs and help them avoid to make mistakes or correct them
- Provide descriptive links
- Control the contrast between text and background color
Our solution is improved regularly by a series of usability tests that includes every type of users to go beyond the WCAG rules and guarantee a practical usage of the platform.
Who can I contact if I still have questions?
Because Civocracy wants every citizen, regardless of age or disability, to be able to express their opinion, we strive to make our platform ever more accessible.
